It’s been quite a week. Stock markets around the world showed sharp declines on Monday; on Tuesday, the Federal Reserve cut its benchmark interest rate by three-quarters of a percentage point. The rate cut helped stem the losses on some indexes, but by January 23, the volatility had returned. The obvious fear is one of recession — a possibility that the White House and Congress are trying to avert by coming up with a stimulus package that will keep the economy off life support. Are we headed into a recession? How effective will the Fed’s interest rate cut be, and what is the outlook for the Asian and European economies? Knowledge@Wharton asked finance professors Jeremy Siegel and Franklin Allen to comment on these issues.

The worldwide collapse of stock prices has many victims — pension funds, insurance companies, hedge funds, financial services firms. But those are players who, if they are smart, have the wherewithal to withstand a steep sell-off. Some will even use short-sales or derivatives bets to profit on falling prices.

What about the small investor, the individual who is socking away modest sums for retirement or college costs? Should small investors rush for the sidelines? Or should they view this as a buying opportunity and plough more money into the market?

Maaf

Sudah lama saya tak mengisi blog ini sejak awal januari blog ini dluncurkan. kendala utama adalah kesibukan di kantor yang sudah mengumpul. selain pekerjaan rutin, hal yang bersifat proyek juga menjadi kendala tersendiri. Padahal ada beberapa hal yang ingin saya tulis di blog. diantaranya adalah Indonesia business outlook in 2008, standar harga retail yang berbeda, pengalaman dengan esia wifone, pendapat atas marketing perbankan syariah, dan prospek investasi di pasar modal di tahun 2008.

Kendala infrastruktur juga salah satu alasannya. selain saya baru saja mendapat jatah komputer kerja pada pertengahan Januari ini, di rumah juga belum ada komputer. Blog ini sebenarnya hasil kekosongan waktu di bulan desember 2007 kemarin, namun komitmen untuk terus aktif mengisi blog sulit saya penuhi karena saya gak bisa mengesampingkan pekerjaan kantor hanya untuk mengisi blog ini toh. Di akhir tahun 2004 sebelum berangkat ke Melbourne juga saya tidak punya beban pekerjaan yang berat sehingga saya sempat membuat website saat itu di www.geocities.com/murtazafa/ . Kesimpulannya, di saat kosong pekerjaanlah saya sempat berinteraksi dengan blog ataupun website saya.

Jadi mohon maaf, apabila teman-teman yang telah mengunjungi blog saya selama 2 minggu terakhir ini tidak menemui sesuatu yang baru. Saya akan cari waktu di bulan Februari untuk mengisi blog ini dengan analisa2 dan pengalaman2 saya.
